Pang Mapha After Rain

The smell of wet red clay, steaming limestone crags, and the sudden quiet when a mountain storm passes over the basin.

The rain arrived suddenly at three in the afternoon, beating heavily on the corrugated iron roofs of Soppong before softening into a gentle, steady mist. Within twenty minutes, the limestone cliffs surrounding the valley began to breathe: long white plumes of water vapor rising from the bamboo groves like smoke. The Lang River swelled, turning the color of steeped tea. In the quiet that followed, the only sound was water dripping from banana leaves onto the damp red earth.
