A journey through three immense limestone river caverns by pressure-gas lantern and bamboo raft.
What This Experience Entails
Tham Lod is an immense subterranean river sanctuary where the Lang River vanishes into the mountain. Guided on foot and bamboo raft by local Shan and Lahu women, you drift through monumental subterranean cathedrals adorned with towering calcite stalagmites, ancient coffin relics, and swirling roosts of thousands of cave swallows.
What the Day Feels Like
Cool, damp, resonant, and deeply subterranean. As your bamboo raft pushes off into the dark cave entrance, daylight fades and the hiss of the guide's kerosene gas lamp illuminates golden calcite columns towering 50 meters above the black water. Fish swim beneath your raft in crystal-clear river currents.
The Journey Progression
01 · Entry & Lantern Ignition
Meet your licensed village guide at the visitor desk, collect life vests, and watch the kerosene pressure lantern pump to a bright incandescent white-gold flame.
02 · Sao Hin Chamber (Giant Pillar Cave)
Alight from the raft to ascend wooden staircases into the dry upper chamber containing a 21-meter monolithic calcite column and crystalline draperies.
03 · Tukta Chamber (Doll Cave)
Delicate stalactite formations resembling human figures, porcelain statues, and natural limestone terraced pools.
04 · Pi Man Chamber (Coffin Cave) & Raft Exit
Subterranean bamboo raft navigation into the eastern cavern mouth to view 1,700-year-old carved teakwood log coffins lodged high in natural limestone clefts.
What to Know Before You Go
- Wear sturdy footwear with good grip (wet limestone steps can be slick).
- Bring a small flashlight or headlamp in addition to the guide's kerosene lantern.
- Cost: Village guide (200 THB) + Bamboo raft for up to 3 people (~400 - 550 THB).
- Life vests provided and required on rafts.
- Fish food available at entrance to feed giant carp that school beneath the bamboo rafts.
Dry season (Nov - May) offers crystal-clear river water and calm gentle raft drifts. Monsoon season (June - Oct) turns river rushing brown; during peak floods, the 3rd chamber may close temporarily for safety, but upper dry chambers remain open.
Suitable for adults and children of average physical condition. Requires climbing 100+ wooden steps inside chambers and stepping on/off rafts.
